The best planned giving program is a simple planned giving program.  Whatever your organizations’ size or budget or mission or history is, you are just as likely to receive a planned gift if you can do a few simple things.  If you want to learn about gift annuities or charitable trusts, this workshop is NOT for you.  If you are an “in the trenches” executive, fundraising or development staff person (or board member) and want some concrete steps you can take to start and sustain your planned giving program, this is for you. Maureen Pierce has led the Boys and Girls Club through 10 years of growth, taking the club from one site in Chico serving 25 kids a day and an annual budget of $175,000 to seven sites throughout Chico, Paradise, Magalia and Oroville, over 700 youth and teens a day and an annual budget of $2.2 million. Currently Maureen is working with her 36-member board to launch three new initiatives, including:  environmental sustainability; the arts; and planned giving. She is also working closely with the law enforcement community on gang-related issues and on expanding programs and services to Oroville youth.

Collaborating to get Small Grants

in a Highly Competitive Environment

Juri Brilts

Have you ever thought about writing a grant? It’s not as hard as it seems.  Doing a little research, following the guidelines and writing to the criteria should make for a winning proposal.  This workshop will go over the basic elements of a good grant proposal, tips and techniques, and making a compelling argument for funding.  The basic outline of a proposal will be described, and examples shown.

Juri Brilts has been writing grants for over 30+ years, and has raised over $400 million in grants from Federal, State, and local governments, as well as corporations and private philanthropic foundations. He has been a management consultant, Executive Director of a social service agency, and CEO of a performing arts organization. Currently, Brilts is Manager of Grants Research & Development at Butte College.

A recent attendee at one of Laura's classes had this to say."It was a pleasure to meet you on Friday at the Resource Development class. Thank you so much for allowing me to attend Laura Cootsona's class. The tips and lessons I learned that day in class are invaluable. Her enthusiasm is catching, and after taking the class I feel more confident that I, normally a shy person, can now better take part in helping to raise money for the Torres Shelter. Thanks again!"

Greg Cootsona has always been intrigued by the rhythms of life. From his earliest days growing up in Menlo Park, California, to hissojourn as a pastor in New York City, he has striven to betterunderstand how life is to be lived and how we can be at our best forthe work we are called to do and for those we love. His recentlyreleased book, SAY YES TO NO,is a pushback to the pressures of today's high tech, constantly wiredworld. Cootsona was a pastor at the Fifth Avenue Presbyterian Church inNew York City, living a non-stop, around the clock life caring for hiscongregation, pursuing advanced degrees, raising two daughters andnurturing his marriage when life issued a wake up call. The illusion ofbeing able to juggle it all was shattered for Cootsona at a cardiacclinic in Manhattan where the then 38 year old was told to slow down --or else.Cootsona's close brush with serious health issues forced himto carefully consider how to balance his life's goals, his growingfamily obligations, and his most important relationships. What hediscovered may be the most important life strategy that a busyexecutive or leader will ever find. His message will force everyoneracing through life to consider not only the cost of their pace, butalso what it would take to create time for the things that will givetheir lives true purpose.
